111th Graduation ceremony in AIT

27 May 2009 is the 111th graduation ceremony in AIT and it is a day that I am waiting for so long. Finally, I got my master degree from AIT (Thailand) and TSP (France). AIT has 3 schools, School of Engineering and Technology (SET), School of Management (SOM) and School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD). All the graduated students get their certificates from the president of AIT. I see this point is very good compare to all universities in Cambodia because I think in all their graduation ceremony, they give the certificate only to some representative of the students and for the rest; they have to go to a reserved room and take the certificate by themself. I do not think that it takes to much time by just giving to all students. Students spend 4 or 5 years to obtaint their bachelor, they have to compete in queing to get the certificate.

Today, AIT has live broadcast about the graduation ceremony. My parents cannot come to join and they do not have internet connection. Therefore, I will by a DVD and play for them when I get back to Cambodia.

Entropy

Entropy comes from a Greek word and it means “Transformation”, it is exactly such a measure. Entropy is frequently used in machine learning and data mining algorithms for things like feature selection or evaluating splits in decision trees. But it should be remembered that entropy, an idea born from classical thermodynamics, is a quantitative entity, and not a qualitative one. That means that entropy is not something that is fundamentally intuitive, but something that is fundamentally defined via an equation, via mathematics applied to physics. Remember in your various travails, that entropy is what the equations define it to be. There is no such thing as an “entropy”, without an equation that defines it.

It is used in various fields : http://www.tim-thompson.com/entropy1.html

Now I am taking special study with other 3 students, Malayphone, Phen ek and Got. Non of us had take data mining course so we start by follow the text book and when we finish it, we will read some papers. The text book is Data Mining (Concept and Techniques) by Jiawei Han and Micheline kamber.

Last week Got presented the chapter one and I also gave one presentation about an overview of Data Warehouse. And this week Phen ek will finish chapter 2.

I think my special study is improving slowly now because I have to join English class and I also work on other project for admission office.

Data cleaning

Data cleaning means to clean the bad record before we transfers the data to the other database. It is like to check the validity of the data.

For example, the attribute gender can have only the value male or female.
